Agroponiente drives Europe’s agri-tech revolution from Almería through AI and sustainability

Imanol Almudí, CEO of Agroponiente, participated in the Lisbon Agriconferences 2025, a leading international forum on agri-food innovation, where he presented the company’s Digitalization Master Plan — a pioneering model that redefines the future of intensive greenhouse agriculture.

In a conversation led by Juan Martínez Barea, founder and Executive Chairman of Savian Robotics, Almudí shared how Agroponiente has transitioned, in just three years, into a profitable, digital, and sustainable model, with over 40% growth in both volume and revenue.

“After two generations where purchasing power was in the hands of large distribution centers, producers are regaining control. The future lies in producing better and with purpose, supported by artificial intelligence and digitalization as drivers of change,” stated Almudí.

Thanks to its partnership with Savian Robotics, Agroponiente has implemented more than 150 hypersensorized hectares, achieving:

  • 30% water savings

  • 32% reduction in labor costs

  • 23% decrease in fertilizer use

This represents the largest smart farming deployment in Southern Europe.

As Almudí pointed out: “True digitalization is not about having technology, but about understanding the problem, sharing purpose and applying intelligence to data.”

As part of its Digital Master Plan, Agroponiente aims to:

  • Double its revenue within four years

  • Digitize 100% of its own production

  • Encourage adoption among more than 4,000 associated farmers

“The agriculture of the future is not built on more water or land, but on more intelligence. Almería and Agroponiente are proving that Europe’s agri-sector can lead the next technological revolution,” Almudí concluded.
